Keeping an Updated 3d Model of your Facility

As a former GIS Manager at the Greater Toronto Airport Authority, one of the hardest products to provide users is a current orthophotography of the Airport. Once you fly the airport for imagery, the next construction site makes the Ortho you just created out of date.

With new aerial sensors that integrate Lidar and imagery collection in one unit, creating an updated model as construction progresses is now doable.

The reason is the LiDAR file format “LAS” version 1.4. This allows each point in the lidar data collection to examine the imagery collected and copy the RGB values into the lidar Point, which can now be displayed in imagery color values with the 3d data of the lidar intact.

OK, so you now have a Lidar display that looks like an orthophoto, big deal, well if that was the end of it you’d be correct. But the LAS Version 1.4 can be created with Survey Grade Total Stations, Mobile Mapping systems, and even SLAM units can produce a colorized Lidar.

All of a sudden, that construction As-Built survey can be delivered as an LAS file format, which can be dropped into your larger facility Lidar 3d Model.
